The Evaluation of Orthopedic Casts
Orthopedic casts for use in the treatment of bone fractures or other conditions requiring immobilization of body members are generally formed from a strip of fabric impregnated with a substance which hardens into a rigid structure after the strip has been wrapped around the body member.
fiberglass as the scrim material has been used so far, since it provides a cast with the highest strength-to-weight ratio.
Fiberglass has been known as a potent carcinogen and can enter the body through inhalation or skin penetration. This has simulated
the search for other
strip of fabric that provides enough strength to protect patient and safe working environment to orthopedic technicians. Polyester fabric has been chosen as a more reasonable scrim material. In addition to a safety-factor,
used cast made of polyester is easy to dispose and thus environmentally friendly because polyester can be burned.
